800 mm Vintage glass explosion proof cast aluminium light is a restored and polished ship light previously employed in ships’ engine rooms, cargo decks and similar areas. This 800 mm Vintage glass explosion proof cast aluminium light was designed to allow efficient lighting on LNG or LPG carriers and chemical container ships where explosion proof lighting is essential. Built in the 1970’s, these light fittings are extremely heavy duty weighing around 12kg each.

They are ridiculously over engineered for the purpose we now see them being used for, but they are an industrial style that we think would work well in an industrial themed cafe or hotel. Incorporating a very thick 130mm diameter glass containment tube, they may also provide lighting for food preparation areas i.e., shatterproof. In some cases it may be prudent to replace this thick glass tube with a new Poly Carbonate tube. This will reduce shipping weight and provide an UN-breakable solution where appropriate. Choose to ship with poly carbonate tube as an option when ordering. Be aware that with both clear internal LED strip cover and Clear Poly Carbonate there is a banding effect created by internal reflection. See gallery images.

These lights have been stripped of their original paint and then polished to a degree, but not to a “perfect surface”. We clean them up as best we can, but they will show signs of wear consistent with their age. The original vapour containment system and ballast for the fluorescent tubes are removed and then retro-fitted with a custom manufactured LED strip assembly, that provides 360 degree light output, and an external LED driver. The LEDs are high quality with a Colour Rendition Index of >90. The LED can be dimmed via the driver.

Wiring and driver

The driver location can be concealed in the ceiling space or surface mounted. All new wiring is completed ready to be installed by your electrician. We supply chain suspension when installed as a pendant. However, you may prefer to hard mount it to a ceiling or to a wall vertically.

Choose between 240V and 120V to suit your Country voltage.  For US and Canada, UL listed components are used but the light fitting itself is not UL listed.
TRIAC Dimming is compatible with most mains-connected trailing or leading edge dimmers. 1-10V dimming can be used with any 1-10V dimmer or other systems such as DALI. You can also choose to have this supplied with no driver and supply your own to supply 24 volt constant voltage to suit your control system.

Please note these light fittings are refurbished and no longer qualify as vapour or explosion proof. Therefore they are not suitable for hazardous applications.
